How to wash a car with PPF or a ceramic coating

Protected cars are easier to wash but still need washing.

PPF and ceramic coatings make washing a lot easier. Dirt releases faster and water beads off. But how you wash still matters. The wrong wash can scratch a coating and lift the edges of fresh film.

After install: wait first

  • PPF: wait about 48–72 hours before the first wash so the film can settle.
  • Ceramic coating: avoid washing for about a week while it fully cures.

We'll give you exact timing at pickup.

The routine

  1. Rinse first. Get loose dirt and grit off before anything touches the paint.
  2. Use a pH-neutral car soap. Harsh or high-alkaline cleaners wear down coatings faster.
  3. Two buckets. One with soap, one with plain water to rinse your mitt, so you're not dragging grit back onto the car.
  4. Wash top to bottom. The lower panels are the dirtiest. Do them last.
  5. Dry gently. A clean microfiber drying towel or a car blower.

What to avoid

  • Brush car washes. They drag grit across the paint and can scratch coatings.
  • Pressure washing film edges up close. Keep the nozzle back and don't blast directly at edges, especially in the first month.
  • Washing in direct hot sun. Soap dries on the paint and leaves spots.
  • Wax and polish. Not needed on a coated car, and abrasive polishes wear coatings down.

Touchless automatic washes are fine when you can't hand wash.

Michigan winter

Salt is the priority. Rinse the car often in winter, especially the lower panels and wheel wells, even if you can't do a full wash. A coated car releases salt film much more easily. More on what road salt does to paint.

Bird droppings and sap

Remove them as soon as you can, especially in summer. A coating or film keeps them from etching quickly, but they're still acidic. Soak with a quick-detail spray and lift off gently.

Annual maintenance

Once a year, bring the car in. We'll decontaminate the paint, inspect the coating and film, and top up where needed.

Common questions

How soon can I wash my car after PPF? Wait about 48–72 hours so the film can settle.

Can I take a ceramic coated car through a car wash? Touchless washes are fine. Avoid brush washes, which can scratch.

Do I need to wax a car with a ceramic coating? No. The coating replaces wax.
